3. Eligibility Requirements for Project Management Professional (PMP)
Anyone may apply to work as a project manager, but not everyone is accepted. Before approving an application, the PMI has strict eligibility criteria. Depending on your educational level, there are two sets of criteria. In one of the two categories below, you must satisfy all of the prerequisites:
- a four-year college diploma
- Project management experience of at least 36 months is required.
- CAPM Certification or a minimum of 35 hours of project management education/training
- A high school diploma or an associate’s degree are also acceptable options (or a global equivalent)
- Project management experience of at least 60 months is required.
- CAPM Certification or a minimum of 35 hours of project management education/training
As you can see, the most significant distinction between these criteria sets is the amount of schooling. Those with a four-year degree only need 36 months of project management experience, while high school graduates and those with an associate’s degree need 60 months. Getting the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is the easiest method to qualify for the third bullet point in both lists if you haven’t had any formal project management education or training. To apply for this 150-question test, you need 23 hours of project management instruction compared to the 35 hours required for the PMP. There are a few key elements to be aware of if you want to make sure you’re qualified for the PMP. For instance, your work experience must only include professional tasks (no personal projects like planning your wedding, private home improvement projects, etc.).
